What is Camera Day all about??

All people regardless of age, nation, race or culture, cherish fond memories. To be reminded on such poignant moments, pictures are taken. One of my favourite quotes,

“People say that a time machine can’t be invented, but they’ve already invented a device that can stop time, cameras are the world’s first time machines.” – Rebecca McNutt

Needless to ask, but can you imagine a world without cameras now? For many of you, a camera is your most prized possession and therefore the love of your life. Can you enjoy any event without taking pictures? The mere thought is enough to scare us. So, to summarize this essential part of our lives now, June 29th every year is celebrated as Camera Day.

This day celebrates photographs, the camera and its invention. Photography is all about celebrating the gift and ability we have to communicate through this powerful visual medium. It’s an art which has revolutionized the way we see and perceive the world.

Why do we love photography so much?

A camera has emerged to be an irreplaceable tool which beautifully captures and replicates life's memorable experiences and moments. For emotional beings as us, this little medium lets us freeze all those special and unforgettable moments and document our lives.

Something ordinary turns unique once you are behind the lens. Photography gives us a different perspective of the world.

Cameras give us the power to explore various aesthetic possibilities offered by color, light, form and shape. With this dainty tool, you can express yourself-your opinions, interests and beliefs. And now with an overabundance of options and various technological advancements, you can explore a multitude of ways to capture and represent reality or rather bend it too. And it is not just about photos, but cameras find application in security management, surveillance and traffic monitoring. The utility of a camera is ample and wide-ranging.

Keep on capturing those timeless beautiful memories. No-one can take it away from you. Have a look at our Camera competition on our Facebook page, Prestige Academy, and stand a chance to win.

We here at Prestige Academy offer an Advanced Certificate in Communication in Photographer, a Higher Certificate in Photography as well as a Bachelor or Arts in Visual Communication Design. For more information, visit out website - http://www.prestigeacademy.co.za/

South African Youth Day - a time to celebrate our youth.

16 June 1976 has gone down as a huge day in history, in South Africa and in the global community as well. On this day, across many township of this country, the youth made a huge sacrifice. They stood together as one and laid down their lives for the sake of freedom. They fought for equality and for everyone’s voice to be heard.

As today’s youth, we are also facing a lot of challenges. Our challenges may be different, but they are equally as big. Our youth is faced with drugs, unemployment, teenage pregnancy, the HIV pandemic and the illiteracy on a daily basis. As we work through these challenges, it is important to look back as how far we have come and to celebrate the youth of 1976 who played a vital role in getting us where we are today.

Today we are free to go where we please, to be friends with whom we choose, to attend the schools and universities that we prefer and to learn in a language that we are comfortable with. We have forums, parties and programmes that enable us to voice our opinions and make sure that we as the youth, are heard. We have access to the news, internet and social networking platforms that keep us updated and give us the platform to be publishers and express our thoughts and opinions too. As the future leaders of this country, we have the power to stand together and make an impact.

So today, you should make time to celebrate the youth. Look back on how far we have come and the potential we as the youth of today, possess. Use this day to contribute to youth development in your area. It does not have to be anything big; even a small start makes a huge difference. Help a young person with their homework, ask someone about their future plans and offer them some advice, or even donate some money to a youth programme close to your heart.

Let us know where you will be this Youth Day, and how will YOU be celebrating our youth?

Here is some South African youth and their thoughts on Youth Day:

Motlalkgotso Tosos:

“I associate this day with sacrifice, selflessness and pride.”

Rudzani Munonoka:

“The day is a celebration, honoring the youth who fought for their educational rights.”

Shaun Demmer:
“Thousands of youth marched because the government at the time made Afrikaans a compulsory learning medium in township schools.”

Stuart Buchanan:

“As much as I view this as a tragedy, it also reveals the incredibly resilient spirit of South African’s youth”

Prestige Academy student lands The Pretty Blog internship!

Her name is Daniela de Freitas. She is 22 years old. Daniela is a 3rd year BCom Marketing student at Prestige Academy. “I started studying marketing not knowing exactly which avenue I would end up going into. My intentions were to one day combine my career in marketing with my life passions which is fashion and creativity,” says De Freitas. Daniela further explains with any programme, times can often be challenging although fortunately for her they are given special attention and guidance to at Prestige Academy.

Daniela has always been a follower of a lifestyle blog called The Pretty Blog, featuring blog posts about traveling, weddings, DIY and other exciting topics. The Pretty Blog posted on their social media pages that they were looking for an intern and she was beyond excited that this could possibly be her! After completing numerous forms as well as submitting various assignments, Daniela got an e-mail that she has landed an interview. At the end of her interview she got told that her dream internship was hers.

Daniela will start her amazing new journey on the 13th of June, where she will work at The Pretty Blog as an intern, full time during the 5 weeks in the holiday. Thereafter she will spend two days a week for 7 weeks at her internship while she completes her marketing degree.

We asked Daniela on her thoughts about Prestige Academy, and her experience as a student where she replied to, “Prestige Academy is a great college to attend and I would recommend Prestige to anyone looking to further their studies. Prestige has been very accommodating with fitting my studies around my internship and their support and encouragement has been exceptional.  As with any tertiary education you are faced with many hardships along the way but I feel that we will all end up with good all-rounded knowledge and ready to face the world. I have been told countless times that many people applied for this internship and would have done anything to receive it, therefore  I am so proud of my achievement and motivated to do the best that I can do with this opportunity.”
